Welcome to Alan Buckingham: Artist / Sculptor

With a studio based in the heart of Manchester since 1980, Alan Buckingham Artist / Sculptor, works with mild  steel, wood, clay, stone, bronze and plaster. His professional practice has been supported by his extensive teaching across a number of Higher Education Art Schools throughout the country, and in Athens, Greece. In 1999, he took on the post of Head of BA Fine Art, and developed an MA Fine Art at the University of Bolton, and later on took the additional role of leading the Art and Design BA and Foundation Programme. He retired in 2019 to give more focus to his own creative work.  Alan's sculpture is concerned with a sense of 'the object' and our reaction to man-made objects that inhabit our world. Although primarily abstract, there is a sense of familiarity and a subconscious connection at play within the sculptures.

About

Alan Buckingham studied Sculpture at St.Martin's School of Art in London from 1975 to 1978. He went on to study for his MA in Fine Art / Sculpture at Manchester Polytechnic from 1978 to 1979. On completion of his MA Degree, in 1979, Alan established his first studio in an old cotton mill, in the Ancoats area of Manchester.

The newly established Castlefield Gallery in Manchester became the venue for his first one-man exhibition in 1989. In 1990, he won the prestigious Henry Moore Fellow in Sculpture, funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. He worked as Sculptor Fellow in Residence at Wimbledon School of Art from 1990 to 1991.

In 1992, he was amongst an emerging group of artists who helped to establish the first Rogue Studio's, Manchester's largest Artists Studio group, by Piccadilly Station in Manchester. During this time he continued to work in a number of different Art Schools as a part-time lecturer in Fine Art, and Sculpture, Artists-in-Schools residencies, and commission work, whilst establishing his career as a professional practising artist. Alan also worked on a number of public art commissions, including the Hidden Gem Passageway in Manchester. In 2006 Alan moved out of the Rogue Studio's and set up his own studio at his home where he continues to work in a variety of media. He retired from teaching in 2019 and now works full-time on his artwork.
